As a bridge to a fair, inclusive, and just world, WID’s Global Heumann Fellowship Program will uphold and expand Judy’s legacy by assisting disability leaders and advocates worldwide in their efforts to advance disability justice and rights in their local communities. Research, writing a white paper, networking, supporting chances for collaboration, and program development are among the tasks assigned to fellows in order to advance WID’s mission and strategic focus areas, which include: disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, and climate resilience; global community inclusion; accessibility and universal design; regional and global policy; and the all-around power of activism.
Every fellow participates in a distinct range of activities during this 12-month fellowship term, including research strategies, advocacy, program development, and thought leadership on national and international policy, as well as contributions to initiatives aimed at advancing the rights of people with disabilities worldwide. Fellows will prioritize identifying and spearheading research in their specific regions, areas of expertise, and in partnership with WID.
Qualifiability Standards:
Disabled visionary leaders with a track record of advocacy, communication, and powerful teamwork are sought after by the Global Heumann Fellowship. Must be able to maintain flexibility when working with a varied, international team and be productive when working remotely.
- possess three years or more of relevant experience working in the disability rights movement.
- possess firsthand knowledge of living with a disability.
- seasoned in advocating for global problems pertaining to disability rights Flexibility and the ability to work under minimal supervision while swiftly adjusting to new or unforeseen tasks.
- Throughout the fellowship, a dedication to excellence and a willingness to be a dependable, responsible, and responsive team member.
- High degree of familiarity using the English language in both spoken and written forms is known as English proficiency.
- Will devote approximately 20 hours per week, or part-time, to the fellowship program and the suggested research project during the

Requirements:
- possess an academic degree that, by the application date, is equal to a U.S. bachelor’s degree, whether it was obtained domestically or overseas.
- possesses a solid background in campaigning for human rights and disabilities.
- Regular use of a computer, the internet, and an appropriate workspace.
- The capacity and willingness to work periodically at non-standard hours in order to accommodate various time zones
- Willingness to be accessible via real-time messaging apps like Signal or WhatsApp.
- possess a great deal of writing expertise or have been published as a writer on disability rights issues.
Timeline:
This is a part-time, twelve-month fellowship, with a term from July 2024 to July 2025. Individuals who have lived disability experience active in the disability community and have extensive experience or leadership within the disability rights and disability justice fields are encouraged to apply.
- At this time, all members of WID are working remotely throughout the United States and the fellowship is completely virtual.
- Fellows, WID, and collaborators will establish meeting frequency mindful of multiple time zones.
- The successful fellow must possess the right to work in the location in which they will be based. WID is unable to sponsor visas or relocation for this fellowship.

Time Commitment: Part Time (Up to 20 hours/week)
Term: July 2024 to July 2025
- The period of application/candidate review will take place from April 1, 2024, through April 30, 2024.
- All applicants will be notified by email of their advancement or of their non-selection in May 2024.
- Finalists will be scheduled for a virtual interview (using Zoom) in May 2024.
- Fellows will be notified of their acceptance on or by June 7, 2024.
