West African Research Association (WARA) Residency Fellowship 2024 (Stipend available)

Summary:

WARA Residency Fellowship is a program that allows WARA member institutions in the US to host a West African scholar for 4-8 weeks. The purpose of the residency is to enhance transatlantic exchange and collaboration, and to provide the scholar with opportunities for research, lecturing, and/or working with American colleagues. The fellowship is funded by the US State Department and administered by the West African Research Association. Here is some more information about the fellowship:

Application Requirements:

  • The application must be submitted by a WARA member institution that wants to host a specific scholar. Individual scholars cannot apply directly.
  • The application must include the following documents:
  • Name and contact information of the WARA host institution representative
  • A 50-80 word abstract of the proposed residency, stating the purpose and the host institution contact person
  • A proposal of no more than six pages, describing the visiting scholar, the residency activities, the contribution to WARA’s goals, the expected impact or outcome, and any support from the host institution
  • A curriculum vitae of the visiting scholar
  • A letter of interest from the scholar
  • A letter of support from a relevant administrator at the host institution
  • A proof of citizenship in the form of a copy of the scholar’s passport (only scholars eligible for non-immigrant visas to the US will be considered)

Fellowship Benefits:

  • WARA will cover the round-trip travel costs of the selected scholar and provide a stipend of $3,500 for meals and local transportation.
  • The host institution is encouraged to provide additional support such as housing, office space, library privileges, laboratory facilities, or other resources for the duration of the residency.

Fellowship Type:

  • The fellowship is a short-term exchange program that is not meant to fill faculty positions.
  • The fellowship is open to scholars from any discipline and any West African country.
  • The fellowship duration is 4-8 weeks, depending on the availability and preferences of the scholar and the host institution.

Award Fellowships:

  • The number of fellowships awarded each year depends on the availability of funds and the quality of applications.
  • The selection of fellows is based on a competitive and peer-reviewed process by a committee of WARA board members and staff.
  • The selected fellows will be notified by April 15, 2024 and are expected to complete their residencies by September 30, 2024.
