UNESCO Ocean Innovation Academy

UNESCO Ocean Innovation Academy

UNESCO Ocean Innovation Academy is an interdisciplinary, international initiative designed to empower young students and professionals to develop innovative solutions for ocean sustainability. Aligned with the UN Ocean Decade and Agenda 2030, the Academy offers capacity building, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities.

UNESCO Ocean Innovation Academy Structure:

The Academy is organized into five key phases:

  1. Preparatory Weeks (January–February): Universities promote the project and form multidisciplinary student groups, establishing contact with UNESCO.
  2. Induction Week (February–April): Participants engage in webinars introducing the Academy’s concept, ocean challenges, and sustainability frameworks. Activities include peer-to-peer networking and team-building exercises.
  3. Mentoring (March–May): Students receive guidance from high-level mentors, including experts from start-ups, laboratories, and the watch industry, facilitated by IOC-UNESCO.
  4. Incubation (June): Teams develop contest materials, such as prototypes, which are evaluated by an international jury. Group leaders may visit Venice and the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, with access to local experts and labs.
  5. Contest: Projects are assessed by a high-level jury panel selected by Panerai and IOC-UNESCO. The best project is awarded at a final ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, featuring group representatives, mentors, and high-level speakers.

Main Responsibilities of UNESCO Ocean Innovation Academy :

  • Universities: Actively promote the project, support the creation of multidisciplinary groups, and provide resources for student participation.
  • Students: Participate in all phases of the Academy, develop and present innovative projects addressing ocean challenges, and collaborate with peers and mentors.

This comprehensive program aims to equip the next generation with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to sustainable ocean solutions.
