Native Hawaiian Health Care Improvement Act Program Grant

Summary:
The Native Hawaiian Health Care Improvement Act Program (NHHCIA) offers grants to support a variety of initiatives aimed at improving the health status of Native Hawaiians. Funded projects address comprehensive health promotion, disease prevention, and primary health services tailored to meet the unique needs of Native Hawaiian communities.

Eligibility:

  • Two types of awards are available:
    • Administrative Funding: Open to Papa Ola Lokahi, a statewide Native Hawaiian health organization responsible for coordinating and providing technical assistance to the five certified Native Hawaiian Health Care Systems (NHHCSs).
    • Services Funding: Open to the five certified NHHCSs recognized and certified by Papa Ola Lokahi to provide comprehensive health services to Native Hawaiians.
  • All applicants must be located in the State of Hawaii.
  • Projects must directly benefit Native Hawaiian communities.

Benefits:

  • Grant amounts vary depending on the type of award:
    • Papa Ola Lokahi: Up to $2.8 – $3.4 million annually for administrative purposes.
    • NHHCSs: Up to $5.1 million annually for service provision.
  • Funding supports activities such as:
    • Primary care services, including dental and behavioral health.
    • Chronic disease prevention and management programs.
    • Culturally-appropriate health education and outreach.
    • Infrastructure development and capacity building for health care systems.
    • Training and mentorship for Native Hawaiian health care professionals.
