Calling all Translators: Apply for the Global Africa Translation Fellowship!

The Africa Institute is seeking applications for the fourth cohort of its Global Africa Translation Fellowship program! This is your chance to receive funding of up to $5,000 to translate important works from Africa and its diaspora into English or Arabic (other languages are considered).

Who can apply?

The fellowship is open to scholars worldwide (Global South) who are passionate about making African and African Diaspora studies accessible to a wider audience.

What are they looking for?

  • Project Proposal: Describe the work you plan to translate (poetry, prose, critical theory, etc.) and explain its significance. Is it a new work or a re-translation of a classic text?
  • Your Expertise: Submit your CV/resume highlighting your experience and qualifications.
  • Sample Translation: Share a 4-5 page excerpt of the original text and your translated version.
  • Copyright Status: If the work isn’t public domain, provide copyright information and a letter granting rights for English translation.

How to Apply:

  1. Combine all required documents (statement, sample, copyright info (if applicable), and CV) into a single PDF file.
  2. Name the file with your Last Name followed by First Name (e.g., SMITH-JOHN.pdf).
  3. Send the PDF file as an attachment to [email address removed]. Use the same format (LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME application) in the email subject line.

Deadline: Applications close on Saturday, June 1st, 2024.
