Sustainable Development Officer at ESCWA

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is currently accepting applications for the position of Sustainable Development Officer (P4 level) in the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster, based in Beirut, Lebanon.

Main Responsibilities of Sustainable Development Officer at ESCWA:

  • Project Management: Oversee the development and implementation of projects related to sustainable natural resources management and climate resilience. This includes monitoring progress, identifying and addressing issues, and ensuring effective communication with project counterparts.
  • Consulting and Capacity Building: Design and lead workshops and consulting assignments in collaboration with member states, focusing on climate change issues. Assist in developing actionable plans for clients to manage climate-related challenges.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct research on sustainable natural resources management and climate resilience. Present findings using narrative and geospatial tools, and develop policy recommendations, particularly concerning climate change impacts on water, land, and biodiversity.
  • Data Management: Design geospatial data collection and analytical tools. Analyze climate projections, identify data issues, and prepare conclusions to inform policy and decision-making.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Prepare written outputs on climate change topics, including background papers, analyses, and contributions to publications. Provide substantive support for meetings and conferences by proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, and preparing relevant documents and presentations.
  • Interagency Collaboration: Participate in or lead inter-agency task forces or working groups, offering technical guidance and support to team members and junior staff.
  • Outreach and Training: Initiate and coordinate outreach activities, including conducting training workshops and seminars, and delivering presentations on assigned topics.

    Qualifications of Sustainable Development Officer at ESCWA:

    • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in development economics, sustainable development, environmental science, public policy, natural resources management, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
    • Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development, policy formulation, project or program management, or related areas. Experience with intergovernmental processes, multi-stakeholder coordination, and inter-agency collaboration is required. Experience within the UN system or international organizations is desirable.
    • Skills: Proficiency in geospatial analysis and data visualization methods. Strong analytical, research, and drafting skills. Excellent communication and presentation abilities. Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
    • Languages: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic or another UN official language is an advantage.
