Summary:
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers the GPD Program Special Need Grant to support transitional housing and supportive services for veterans experiencing homelessness who have special needs. This program focuses on assisting veterans who are chronically mentally ill, frail elderly, individuals caring for minor dependents, terminally ill, or women.

Eligibility:

  • Non-profit organizations currently operating GPD programs with a proven track record of serving veterans with special needs.
  • Projects must serve veterans residing in the United States.
  • Priority given to projects demonstrating:
    • Experience working with the specific special needs population they serve.
    • Culturally competent and trauma-informed services.
    • Collaboration with other community partners to address veterans needs holistically.
    • Measurable outcomes and data-driven approaches.

Benefits:

  • Grants range from $250,000 to $500,000 per year for up to two years.
  • Funding supports activities such as:
    • Providing private rooms with private bathrooms in transitional housing units.
    • Offering supportive services like case management, mental health counseling, and job training.
    • Connecting veterans to healthcare, transportation, and other essential resources.
    • Implementing evidence-based practices and conducting program evaluations.
