Special Education Volunteering

Location:

The project is based in St. Mary Parish, a beautiful region on Jamaica’s northeast coast. You’ll be working with specialized schools or care centers within this area that cater to children with various learning or developmental needs.

Fees:

• The program starts at an affordable rate, typically around $525 for a one-week experience (check IVHQ website for exact pricing).
• This fee is all-inclusive, covering airport pickup upon arrival in Montego Bay, orientation, accommodation (often shared volunteer housing), meals (breakfast is common), and 24/7 in-country support throughout your stay.

Volunteer Requirements:

• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older (family programs may also be available).
• Prior experience working with children with special needs is beneficial but not mandatory. A genuine desire to support these children, a positive attitude, patience, and a willingness to learn are crucial.
• Your tasks may involve assisting qualified professionals with various activities, such as:
  • Implementing individualized education plans
  • Facilitating therapy sessions (under supervision)
  • Creating a stimulating and supportive learning environment
  • Participating in play and social interaction activities
• Basic English communication skills are necessary. While additional language skills are not required, some knowledge of Jamaican Patois can be beneficial for cultural immersion and potentially even communication with children or families.
• IVHQ may offer optional training or resources to prepare you for working with children with special needs in a new cultural context.
