Security & Development Fellowships

African Leadership Center (AlC) Peace, Security & Development Fellowships

Summary:

The African Leadership Center (AlC) Peace, Security & Development Fellowships for 2024–2025 are currently accepting applications. Since its founding more than a decade ago, the African Leadership Center (ALC) has been instrumental in developing the next wave of African leaders by fostering talent and sharing African expertise and ideas to further the development of African nations. The ALC aims to educate and impact scholarly, research, and policy discussions on leadership, peace, security, and development in Africa and around the world. It has locations in Nairobi, Kenya, and King’s College London, UK.

In addition to producing cutting-edge research on peace, security, and development and participating in institutional, national, and regional networks to train and mentor the next generation of African academics, the ALC Fellowship programs aim to produce high-achieving graduates with recognizable leadership qualities and skills.

Qualifications:

  • The candidates have to be African women citizens.
  • Before being accepted, successful candidates must possess legitimate travel documents.
  • A master’s or bachelor’s degree is required, and further expertise in the fields of development, security, and peace is desirable.
  • Candidates must be knowledgeable about or have experience with issues related to gender, development, and women’s rights.
  • Applicants must be able to show that they are committed to working toward African peace, security, and prosperity.
  • The ability to conduct research on topics pertaining to African development, peace, and security must be demonstrated by candidates.
  • The program’s basic values—promoting African-led ideas and processes of change, independent thinking, integrity, the pursuit of excellence, recognition of youth agency, and respect for diversity in all its forms must be exhibited by candidates.
  • Upon returning to their home countries and/or organizations, candidates must be able to demonstrate how they intend to use the information they have learned from the Fellowship.
  • Since the curriculum is given entirely in English, candidates must be proficient in both written and spoken English.

Funding:

  • This is a fully funded opportunity, not including any visa application and processing costs. Funds will be made available to the fellows to cover tuition, subsistence in the UK and Africa, and travel expenses related to the programme in both phases.
  • While the ALC has guest rooms that fellows can rent whilst in Nairobi, successful applicants are expected to find their own accommodation at attachment institutions.
  • Fellows are strongly advised to make all necessary accommodation arrangements prior to taking up their positions on the Fellowship Programme.

Fellowships in Peace Security and Development for African Scholars (granting of degrees):

Young African scholars who want to work in the fields of peace, security, and development can apply for this grant and pursue research and academic careers in these areas. It consists of eighteen months of intense academic writing, research, and policy analysis in the area of peace and security, interspersed with a six-month practical attachment to an African university, regional organization, or center of excellence. In addition to receiving specially designed mentoring sessions, fellows at King’s College London obtain academic knowledge through the MSc Global Leadership and Peacebuilding program. Fellows participate to the African Leadership Center’s ten-year study agenda, “Peace, Society, and the State in Africa,” throughout their fellowship.

Application Procedure:

  • To apply for this programme, applicants will need to create an account on the King’s website here and apply under the Peace and Security Fellowship Programme.
  • In addition to applying to the above MSc programme, applicants need to make a separate application for the fellowship programme here.
