UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1977 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976.  UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities to provide adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group.[2] The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996. The twin goals of the Habitat Agenda are adequate shelter for all and the development of sustainable human settlements in an urbanizing world.

Education & Qualifications Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urbanism.
  • Postgraduate degree (Lato Sensu or Stricto Sensu) in Public Administration, Public Policy, International Relations, Urban Studies, Social Sciences, Architecture and Urbanism, Geography, Law, Economics, Engineering or related fields, or four (4) additional years of experience relevant to the position, in addition to the requirement.

Work Experiences:

  • Five (5) years’ experience in project/programme management on issues related to urban planning and/or mobility.
  • Professional experience in developing Master Plans and/or Mobility Plans.
  • Professional experience in designing and conducting participatory activities.
  • Prior experience related to UN and/or any other international agency is an asset.
  • Experience of technological tools and use of software and online platforms.
  • Experience related to online event and conference tools.

Languages:

  • Fluency in Portuguese and English.

Career Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating the Programme.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of the project work plan in accordance with the signed documents and agreements.
  • Collecting information and coordinating the preparation of work plans, periodic narrative progress reports and expense reports for the UN-Habitat office in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Ensuring the implementation of the project according to the work plan and with the support of the project team: a. Prepare the inception report and detailed work plan for the project; b. Prepare Terms of Reference and develop detailed scopes of services for the project, providing potential contractors/consultants with a precise overview of the expected results.
  • Establishing systems for project planning, implementation and monitoring, in collaboration with partners.
  • Guide coordination with local partners (and other stakeholders).
  • Coordinate monitoring and reporting.
  • Facilitate the construction, management and communication of knowledge.
