Frank N. Meyer Medal for Plant Genetic Resources Award

Summary:
The Frank N. Meyer Medal is awarded for distinctive service to the National Plant Germplasm System. It serves as a tribute to Frank N. Meyer, who spent 13 years as an Agricultural Explorer in the Office of Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction. Meyer tragically lost his life in the waters of the Yangtze River. The award recognizes contributions to the plant germplasm collection and use in the U.S. and dedication to humanity through collecting, evaluating, or conserving earth’s genetic resources

Sponsor:

  • The award was initially presented by the American Genetics Genetic Association in 1920 and continued until 1982.
  • Since 1983, the award duties have been overseen by the Crop Science Society of America.

Eligibility:

  • Nominees must have a career interest of at least 10 years in one or more of the following aspects of plant genetic resource programs:
    – Exploration for plant genetic resources.
    – Evaluation of plant genetic resource.
    – Research on preservation of plant genetic resources.
    – Maintenance of plant genetic resources.
    – Superb managerial vision and assistance for national or worldwide plant genetic resource initiatives.
  • Former recipients of the award are not eligible.
  • Nominees must be living at the time of their nomination, and team nominations are also accepted.
