The Belleville News-Democrat, a prominent news organization in southwestern Illinois near St. Louis, is seeking a talented and motivated reporting intern for the summer or fall term. This internship opportunity is open to college juniors, seniors, or recent graduates who are passionate about journalism and eager to gain real-world experience.
As a news intern, you will work closely with experienced professionals and have the opportunity to contribute actively to the fast-paced newsroom environment. The internship is a paid position, spanning 10 weeks, and requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, including occasional nights and weekends.
Responsibilities:
- Cover breaking news, utility stories, and occasional audience-centered trend stories.
- Write articles quickly and accurately, demonstrating solid news judgment.
- Collaborate with seasoned staff members and work directly with a local-news editor.
- Utilize video and social media skills to enhance storytelling (experience in these areas is a plus).
- Learn from mentors and gain valuable insights into the field of journalism.
Qualifications:
- Strong writing skills, with the ability to produce high-quality content under tight deadlines
- Demonstrated news judgment and the ability to engage an audience
- Familiarity with social media platforms and an understanding of what drives interest online
- Entrepreneurial mindset, curiosity, and a high level of energy
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and across different departments
- Familiarity with entry-level video editing platforms is helpful
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle, as some business-related driving may be required
