Through the McClatchy HBCU Development Program, interns have the opportunity to learn and grow in various aspects of the media industry. They work alongside industry veterans, local leaders, and seasoned professionals who guide and mentor them every step of the way. Interns tackle real-world projects that challenge them to think critically, solve problems, and make a tangible difference within the organization and the communities McClatchy serves.

The 2024 Summer Internship Opportunities include:
- Opinion Intern
- Service Journalism Intern – East Team
- HR Culture & Diversity Intern
Key Features of the Program:
This opportunity is available to freshmen and sophomores interested in pursuing careers in any aspect of McClatchy’s business, including journalism, multimedia, digital design, marketing, business, human resources, product innovation, finance, and/or computer science.
Four recipients will each participate in a ten-week full-time internship, starting at $15 per hour.
Recipients must commit to being available for the internship for three consecutive summers and agree to work for McClatchy for one full year upon graduation. Every effort will be made to provide an internship and job in the student’s area of interest.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) verified by an unofficial transcript.
- McClatchy seeks individuals who demonstrate all-around achievement.
- Applicants must be current freshmen or sophomores at an accredited Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
Preferred Qualities:
- Interest in working in the media industry
- Good academic standing achievement
- Volunteer/community involvement and/or extracurricular school activities

A persuasive essay of up to 500 words explaining why you should be selected for this opportunity.
The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $15.00 and $15.50 per hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography, and local wage and hours laws.
