The J.C. Bose Fellowship is a prestigious award in India, recognizing outstanding performance by active scientists. It’s a highly selective, scientist-specific fellowship.

Eligibility:

  • Active scientist with a proven record of excellence, demonstrated by receiving the SS Bhatnagar Prize or a fellowship from a science academy (including engineering, agriculture, and medicine).
  • Currently employed in service at the time of nomination.
  • Indian national working in an Indian institution or university.

Duration:

  • Five years initially. If the fellow retires during the fellowship period, it can continue with a willing host institution.
  • Potential extension for a subsequent five years based on a rigorous review of research achievements during the initial term. At least 25% of extension applications will not be granted.
  • The fellowship can be availed until the age of 68.

Support:

  • Fellowship amount: ₹25,000 per month, in addition to regular income.
  • Research grant: ₹15 lakh per year.
  • Overhead grant: ₹1 lakh per year to the host institute.

Nomination:

  • Nominations are accepted year-round and can be submitted by:
    • Heads of Institutions
    • Existing J.C. Bose Fellows
    • Presidents of National Science Academies

Selection:

  • A Search-cum-Selection Committee specially constituted for this purpose will periodically (usually twice a year) select J.C. Bose Fellows based on broad fellowship scheme guidelines.
