The British Academy is inviting applications for the Foreign Fellowships Programme, which will let excellent early-career academics take the initial steps toward creating an independent research career by acquiring foreign experience.

Aims
The main goal of the International Fellowships Programme is to attract and retain emerging talent in the United Kingdom while also developing a globally connected, mobile research and innovation workforce. The objectives are to attract talented international early-career researchers to conduct research in the UK, support them in pursuing high-quality and innovative lines of research, and provide opportunities for training and career development.
Develop long-term partnerships through networking opportunities and the International Fellowships alumni program.
Funding information
The International Fellowships provide two years of support and are awarded at 80% FEC. Applicants can apply for up to £12,000 in research fees and £8,000 in relocation costs. Applicants must justify the level of research and relocation expenses sought in their applications.
Applicants may also be eligible for follow-up Alumni funding after the completion of their Fellowship to support networking activities with UK-based or foreign researchers.
The British Academy International Fellowships are planned to begin between October 2024 and March 2025. Awards cannot begin before October 1, 2024. A start date on the first of the month is recommended.
This request is intended to sponsor around 15 British Academy International Fellowships.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have a doctoral degree or be in the final stages of completing their PhD (including viva) by the start date of the fellowship award.
- Applicants should have no more than seven years of active full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application, including teaching, industry research, honorary appointments, and/or visiting researcher roles. Career breaks must be explicitly stated and described in the application, for example, “Start and end dates – career break – maternity/paternity leave.”
- Applicants must be working outside the UK and do not hold UK citizenship at the time of application.
- Candidates cannot have lived, worked, or conducted research in the UK in the 12 months preceding the application, except for short-term trips lasting less than three months in total and candidates who are refugees in the UK under the Geneva Convention.
- Applicants who are not currently working are still eligible but must give information on their last supervisor.
Individuals who already live, work, or do research in the UK are ineligible to apply. - Individuals who operate outside the UK but are employed by a UK organization are likewise ineligible to apply.
- Applicants who obtained their Ph.D. at a UK organization must have worked and lived outside of the UK for at least a year at the application deadline.
- Applicants who propose to return to their UK-based Ph.D. organisation and/or Ph.D. supervisor, or to their post-doctoral supervisor, would often be judged ineligible; thus, applicants must have compelling reasons for doing so.
Applicants must be proficient in both spoken and written English. - The applicant must declare their proficiency on the application form, and the UK Sponsor must include the applicant’s competency in their supporting statement.
- Applicants may only submit one application per round. The application must have only one UK sponsor.
- Applicants who were unsuccessful in a prior round of the competition may submit another application in this round.
- Applicants who have previously held a Newton International Fellowship are ineligible to apply for another International Fellowship.
