Communication Specialist Consultant

Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women has been working in Lebanon since 2015 through its triple mandate, encompassing normative support, UN system coordination and operational activities to mobilize urgent and sustained action to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls and support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Operational activities have prioritized advancing women’s leadership and political participation, women and peace and security, and economic empowerment with changing discriminatory gender norms as a cross-cutting area of work.

Under the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) programme, UN Women plays a key role in providing technical assistance to the UN system, government entities, and women’s organizations to advance peacebuilding efforts in Lebanon. UN Women’s catalytic support to various stakeholders amplifies women’s agency and meaningful participation in conflict prevention and peacebuilding and is situated within the overall strategies and approaches of the UN system in Lebanon and the Women Peace and Security agenda.

UN Women’s WPS portfolio in Lebanon includes: a) advancing the implementation of the UNSCR1325 National Action Plan on WPS with NCLW and other government entities including military and security agencies; b) supporting women peacebuilders to prevent and manage conflict, and promote reconciliation at community level; c) coordinating the work of the Women’s Peacebuilding Network in Lebanon (WPNL) as a space for strengthening women’s voices and capacity in peacebuilding; and d) producing knowledge products, research, and policy papers on gender responsive peacebuilding.
