Mary Jaharis Center Co-Funding Grants promote Byzantine studies in North America. These grants provide co-funding to organize scholarly gatherings (e.g., workshops, seminars, small conferences) in North America that advance scholarship in Byzantine studies broadly conceived. We are particularly interested in supporting convenings that build diverse professional networks that cross the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines, propose creative approaches to fundamental topics in Byzantine studies, or explore new areas of research or methodologies.
For the 2024–2025 grant cycle, the Mary Jaharis Center will commit approximately $5,000 to Co-Funding Grants. The value of individual awards will be based on the submitted budget and determined by the grant committee. Applicants are advised that the value of grants awarded is unlikely to exceed $2000 and may be less than the amount sought.
Applications are accepted between 1 November 2023 and 1 February 2024. Notifications will be made in late May 2024.

Eligibility
Scholars whose primary research focuses on Byzantine studies are eligible to apply. Applicants must reside in North America and be affiliated with or a graduate of a North American institution or university. Mary Jaharis Center Co-Funding Grants will not be awarded to institutions or groups. Proposed events may have a co-organizer but grant applications must be submitted by a single individual who will assume responsibility for the grant.
Proposed events must take place in North America. At least half of the active participants should reside in North America. Co-Funding Grants are intended to support activities with a clearly defined objective and of a limited duration.
Applicants must have secured a minimum of 50% of the total projected budget before applying for a Co-Funding Grant. In-kind contributions, such as the provision of meeting space or equipment, may not be counted towards this requirement. Examples of eligible expenses include travel, accommodation, honoraria, facility rental, and AV services and technical assistance. Costs associated with catering, dinners, and equipment purchases are not eligible.
The Mary Jaharis Center is committed to developing opportunities for graduate students and early career scholars to establish themselves in the field, to understanding Byzantium as part of the larger medieval and early modern world, to promoting dialogue between Byzantine studies and other fields, and to encouraging the sharing of research as widely as possible. Preference will be given to activities that further these goals.
Evaluation
Applications will be evaluated using the following criteria:
- Significance: The extent to which the proposed gathering will further scholarship on a fundamental topic in Byzantine studies, apply a new methodology, or explore new avenues of inquiry and has the potential to impact the field beyond the narrow objective of the event.
- Approach: The extent to which the conceptual framework and methodology are clearly presented and appropriate for the stated objective of the proposed gathering.
- Need: The extent to which co-funding will make a significant contribution toward the realization of the proposed gathering.
