Child and Youth Development

This program by IVHQ lets you make a positive impact on the lives of children and youth in St. Mary, Jamaica. You’ll be placed in early childhood education centers, schools, or community centers, assisting teachers and social workers with various activities.

Location

The project is based in St. Mary Parish, a beautiful region on Jamaica’s northeast coast. You’ll be working with local organizations directly serving children and youth within this area.

Fees

• The program starts at an affordable rate, typically around $525 for a one-week experience (check the IVHQ website for exact pricing).
• This fee is all-inclusive, covering airport pickup upon arrival in Montego Bay, orientation, accommodation (often shared volunteer housing), meals (breakfast is common), and 24/7 in-country support throughout your stay.

Volunteer Requirements

• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older (family programs may also be available).
• Prior experience with children is beneficial but not mandatory. A passion for child development, a willingness to learn, and a positive attitude are crucial.
• Your tasks may involve assisting with educational activities, facilitating creative workshops, organizing games and sports, or simply providing emotional support and a positive role model for the children and youth.
• Basic English communication skills are necessary. While additional language skills are not required, some knowledge of Jamaican Patois can be beneficial for cultural immersion and potentially even communication with children or families.
• IVHQ may offer optional training or resources to prepare you for working with children and youth in a new cultural context.
