Scholarship Summary

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a scholarship program funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs that enables U.S. undergraduate students of limited financial means to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. It was named after the late Congressman Benjamin Gilman, a strong supporter of international education.

Host Country: The scholarship is open to study abroad programs in any country outside the United States.

University: There is no university restriction. Students can apply to any accredited institution of higher education offering a study abroad program that meets the eligibility requirements.

Sponsor: The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Institute of International Education (IIE) administers the program.

Eligible Countries: U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

Duration: The scholarship is for study abroad programs ranging from three weeks to one academic year.

Degree: Open to undergraduate students from both two-year and four-year institutions.

Gender: The scholarship is open to students of all genders.

Age: There is no age restriction.

Commitment of Time: Students must be enrolled in a credit-bearing study abroad program. The amount of time commitment will vary depending on the program length.

Deadline: Apply by March 7, 2024 for Fall/Academic Year 2024 & Spring 2025 programs

Additional Information:

  • The scholarship amount is up to $5,000.
  • Students can only receive the scholarship once.
  • Students who are awarded the scholarship must submit a final report after their program is completed.
