Beiling Wu Prize in Writing at Northwestern University 2024
The Beiling Wu Prize in Writing, named after a former Northwestern graduate student in the humanities, is awarded to a doctoral or MFA student in the first year of their PhD or MFA program. The recipient must have written the best critical, analytic essay on literature or literary culture during their first year of study.

Calling all Northwestern first-year PhD and MFA students in the humanities!
- Application Process:
- Nominations are submitted by your program’s Director of Graduate Studies (DGS).
- The DGS will select the strongest critical, analytical essay on literature or literary culture written during your first year.
- A nomination letter from your DGS must accompany your essay. This letter should:
- Briefly explain the context of the essay (e.g., final paper for a seminar)
- Explain how the essay both aligns with and challenges current trends in your field
- Highlight how your essay stands out compared to other first-year student work
- Include any instructor comments if the essay is from a course assignment (optional)
- Combine your essay and the nomination letter into a single PDF file.
- Submit the PDF file to [email address removed] by Monday, July 8th, 2024 (11:59 pm). Ensure your full name is included in all submitted materials.
Selection Process:
- A committee will review all nominated essays.
- Nominees and nominating programs will be notified of the results by the end of September.
