Japan Scholarship Program

The Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB–JSP) was established in April 1988 with financing from the Government of Japan.
It aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries to undertake graduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region.Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

Who can apply?

  • Be a citizen of a country that borrows from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and is also eligible for Japan’s ODA scholarship program.
  • Not hold dual citizenship of any developed nation.
  • Be accepted into a master’s program at a designated ADB-JSP institution.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with excellent academic achievement.
  • Possess at least two years of full-time professional work experience (after your degree) at the time of application. Strong English communication skills are required.
  • Be 35 years old or younger (exceptions may be considered with Japanese government approval).
  • Be in good health.
  • Agree to return to your home country for at least two years after completing your studies to contribute to its development.
  • Not be affiliated with the ADB (staff, directors, consultants, or close relatives).
  • Not be employed by a designated ADB-JSP institution.
  • Not currently live or work in a country other than your home nation.
  • Not already be enrolled in a graduate program.

  • Research students may be eligible for a special thesis preparation grant.

Selection Process

  • ADB-JSP prioritizes rankings from designated institutions.
  • Women and applicants with financial limitations are given preference.
  • Generally, the program does not support those who have previously studied abroad or are pursuing a second master’s degree.
  • Studying in your home country is typically not supported.
  • Nationality diversity across the program and within institutions is considered.
  • Preference is given to candidates with potential for senior development roles and a demonstrated desire to contribute to their home country’s development.
  • Your proposed field of study should align with your background and Japan’s ODA or ADB’s strategic priorities.
