AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards
Honoring Distinguished Reporting on Science
Summary:
Since their inception in 1945, the AAAS Science Journalism Awards have recognized outstanding reporting on science by professional journalists. These internationally acclaimed awards are given to individuals (rather than institutions or publishers) for their coverage of the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Thanks to a generous endowment by The Kavli Foundation, the awards are now called the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards and are open to journalists worldwide.
Application Requirements:
Journalists must submit their work based on scientific accuracy, initiative, originality, clarity of interpretation, and its impact on fostering public understanding of science.
Benefits:
There are two award categories:

- Gold Award: $5,000 prize
- Silver Award: $3,500 prize
Types of Awards:

- Science Reporting – Large Outlet: For text pieces in print or online from large newspapers with a circulation of more than 150,000 or digital-only publications with a regional or national audience.
- Science Reporting – Small Outlet: For text pieces in print or online from small newspapers with a circulation of 150,000 or less or digital-only publications with a local audience.
- Science Reporting – In-Depth: For entries of more than 5,000 words in newspapers, magazines, or online sites.
- Magazine: Stories in print magazines, magazine websites, or digital-only magazines.
- Video In-Depth Reporting: Segments or programs longer than 20 minutes, including stand-alone online videos and audio (radio or podcast).
- Children’s Science News: Open to journalists reporting science news for children up to age 14.
